DAS grünt! on 06.06.2009   Christened Rose Named Alexandrine – Angelika Gramkow as Godmother Alexandrine is the name of the newest rose variety from BKN Strobel located in Holm (Pinneberg). On Sunday, Angelika Gramkow, the mayor of Schwerin, together with Renate Behrmann, the representative for the 2009 German Federal Horticultural Show as well as Armin Eßer, the rose breeder representative gave the rose its name, which has close ties to Schwerin: Alexandrine was the grand duchess of Mecklenburg from 1837 to 1842 on the side of her husband, grand duke Paul-Friedrich. She was the daughter of the Prussian queen Luise and the sister of Emperor Wilhelm I. Alexandrine was highly appreciated because of her social dedication. She founded among others Mecklenburg’s first kindergarten in Ludwigslust. In honor of her, a monument was built in front of her summer residence, the Green House. It is located in the Green House garden, which was designed by Peter Joseph Lenné. This garden is part of the Schwerin castle gardens and with that also a part of the German Federal Horticultural Show. The hybrid tea Alexandrine features an intensive, fruity, lemony fragrance and is suitable both as a container rose for balconies and terraces as well as for flowerbeds. The double flowers with a size of up to 12 cm create an interesting play of colors in cream and orange. The rose reaches a growth height of 60-80 cm. Last year for the Romantica rose "Eden Rose" in the category "The Best Marketable Plant Novelty of the Year", and before that for being the best nursery for assuring quality and having an environmentally friendly plant production at the new business in Holm.
